I have communicated with a great number of people about their biggest social media challenge in preparation for a new teleseries, "The Tao of Social Media Success". Most spoke about the feeling of overwhelm. They were overwhelmed by all the choices they felt they would have to make:
- Why do I have to get involved?
- And, what if I don't get involved?
- Do I have to do ALL of them ... and what are ALL the choices?
- Is it going to take up too much time?
- Will it feel impersonal, inauthentic?
- I have set up my ____ (insert SM here, e.g., Facebook, Twitter ...) account, and now what?
- What will I write about? What can I say?
- What if I am not tech savvy?
These are just some of the questions and decisions facing you if you are getting started or thinking about getting started with social media?
So, let me start by inviting you to STOP, BREATHE and KNOW IT IS OK TO NOT FOLLOW THE CROWD, or "make a million" in a weekend, using social media. It is your choice to get involved, and you can decide to or decide to not get involved in your own time. Heck, you are the boss of you, and you own the business. Besides, the last thing an entrepreneur needs is more stress.
However, if you are on the fence about getting involved with social media and want to take this journey with ease, grace and abundance, let me share some tips to help make this a joyful journey. By the way, some of these tips I learned the hard way.
- Overwhelm: I have to get involved in ALL forms of social media = energy drain.
Overjoyed: Smile, it is your choice if and when to get involved. And, may I suggest you choose 2 that complement each other, e.g., Facebook and a blog. Then add or switch as you learn and feel more confident. Learn about each and let your intuition guide you as to what is best aligned with you, your community and your current skill set.
- Overwhelm: Why should I bother?
Overjoyed: I have a vision, a purpose and a plan for why I will get involved - before I even set up my first social media account. I get to decide if it is for networking, money, research, branding, to share my art (photos), favorite books, musings ... or some other reason?
- Overwhelm: It takes too much time.
Overjoyed: I can do it in my time, and set boundaries, e.g., 10-15 minutes, 2-3 times each day live or do it when I feel it and post automagically with free software, e.g., ping.fm or Hootsuite. This way I can avoid addiction and stay in abundance.
- Overwhelm: Internet connection is impersonal.
Overjoyed: I can make it personal, warm and fuzzy as I desire. I can start by connecting with folks I have met in person. Conversation Tip: Ask them if they use social media, and how it's working for them. And/or get their business card (for correct spelling of their name & photo,) then search for them when back at your computer (FB, Twitter, etc). Once found, invite them to connect, and mention where you met. You can also do this virtually, i.e., invite folks to connect if you have "met" them on the page of a friend or group of which you are a member.Yin essence comes from a place of non-doing, receiving and heart over head. YinPreneurs™ lead with our intuition and trust the divine feminine to make room for opportunity and abundance. So, keep it simple, one decision at a time. And, remember the "F" words = FUN!!
